How to Choose the Right Atlanta Suburb for You | My Top Picks for Families Moving to North Atlanta

When you’re thinking about relocating to the Atlanta metro area, it can feel overwhelming to decide exactly where to live. Atlanta has a wide range of suburbs, each offering something unique depending on what’s most important to you and your family.

As a local real estate agent who moved here myself, I’ve helped countless families just like yours make that transition—and today, I’m sharing four of the most common reasons people choose a city to live in along with my top three suburb recommendations for each one. Let’s dive in.

1️⃣ Proximity to Atlanta

For many people moving to the metro area, being close to downtown Atlanta is a top priority—especially if you work in the city, enjoy nightlife, or want easy access to sports venues like Mercedes-Benz Stadium or State Farm Arena. Here are my top suburbs for proximity:

Sandy Springs

  • Just north of the I-285 perimeter, right along Georgia 400

  • Excellent access to downtown Atlanta and the airport via MARTA rail transit

  • High concentration of corporate headquarters and businesses

  • Appeals to young professionals, couples, and working families

  • Great amenities, dining, and shopping options

Marietta

  • Located northwest of Atlanta, right off I-75

  • Offers historic charm with a vibrant downtown square

  • More suburban feel than Sandy Springs, with lots of single-family homes

  • Family-friendly with good schools and a strong sense of community

2️⃣ Top-Rated Schools & Amenities

If your priority is making sure your kids attend top public schools and your family has access to premium amenities, these are my recommendations:

Alpharetta

  • Some of Georgia’s highest-rated schools

  • Amazing amenities: Avalon, Downtown Alpharetta, and countless parks

  • Thriving tech and startup scene for working professionals

  • One of the most popular choices for families moving to North Atlanta
